Lead Testing
Lead is a chemical element with the symbol Pb and the atomic number 82. It is a very heavy metal that is denser than most common materials. Lead is soft and malleable and has a relatively low melting point and inertness to oxidization. Because of these traits, combined with its abundance, low cost meant lead was seen as a popular material for various applications such as construction, plumbing products, automotive parts, leaded gasoline, weights, shielding, solders and pewters, etc. Because of this since the dawn of the industrial revolution, lead was a very popular material in many productions.
In Akwesasne, there are some major sources of lead exposure to consider. A major source of exposure are in older homes. Lead exposure has been linked to behavioral and learning problems, lower IQ, slowed growth, anemia in children and damage to brain, kidneys, nervous system, heart problems, and reproductive complications in men and women.
The Air Quality program is prepared to assist Akwesasne community members who are concerned that they or their family members are exposed to lead in their homes.
