Mission: To provide law enforcement services to the Mohawks of Akwesasne. To answer calls for service from community members expeditiously and professionally. To investigate crimes, mediate and resolve disputes where possible and to actively participate in crime prevention programs and other community safety programs.
Tribal law enforcement has been serving the southern portion of Akwesasne for nearly twenty years. During this period the department has grown to where it now employs twenty-four officers, six radio communication dispatchers, and one Administrative Assistant. The department provides services to the community through one of three divisions;
Community Services Division (Patrol): The patrol division is responsible for the enforcement of all federal, state, and tribal laws. The patrol division maintains peace in the community, the protection of lives, and the preservation of property. Patrol division will respond to and investigate all complaints received from the public. Patrol will take a proactive approach to combating crime by utilizing crime prevention campaigns and strategies. The community services division operates twenty four hours a day seven days a week.
Detective Division: Provides assistance to the patrol division by conducting criminal investigations and case presentation. Detectives will process crime scene evidence, capture photos for court presentation and maintain case records in accordance with applicable regulations. The Intelligence Analyst Officer is supervised by the Detective Division. The Intel Officer is responsible or tracking all in-coming data as well as disbursing information to other agencies.
Administrative Division: The Chief of Police is the director of law enforcement for the tribe and as such is the Chief Administrator for the department. The Deputy Chief of Police is the assistant director of law enforcement for the tribe. Together, they oversee police operations and are responsible for meeting the needs of the Mohawk Tribal community, through planning, organizing, training, and direction of the Tribal Law Enforcement program.
