Tribal Sub-Chief Benjamin Herne
Benjamin Toshennathe Herne is serving his third consecutive term as an elected Sub-Chief with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe. Benjamin worked as the Promotions/Entertainment/Special Events Manager at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort before being elected as Sub-Chief. He has extensive experience in communications and public relations and graduated with a degree in Business Management, with a focus in Management and Marketing from the State University of New York at Potsdam.
Sub-Chief Herne sits on the Cornell Cooperative Extension Board of Directors for Franklin County and strongly advocates for agriculture, sustainability, and promoting partnerships with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Agriculture Program. Additionally, he serves as Board Director for the Mohawk Indian Housing Corporation and is an Ex-Officio with the Akwesasne Housing Authority.
As former Chairman of the Tewáthahón:ni Corporation, Sub-Chief Herne sees the importance of diversification initiatives that benefit our Tribal programs and revenue generation. He now serves as an Alternate to Chief Conners on the Tewáthahón:ni Board of Directors.
Sub-Chief Herne states, "It excites me to see multiple initiatives benefitting the community including the opening of the Community Service Building (formerly IGA) and the introduction of the amphitheater that will support the arts within Akwesasne."
He strongly supports sports and reinforces the importance of volunteerism by participating in nation-to-nation volleyball tournaments representing Akwesasne.In addition to being the youngest Council member, he prides himself on being the youngest child of the late Robert and Delores (Jock) Herne. His late sister Bernadine Herne is a source of great strength and pride for him in continuing his efforts at the tribal government level. His extracurriculars include fastpitch softball, coaching, and playing indoor volleyball.
