Tribal Sub-Chief Derrick King
Derrick King has been serving the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation by working in administrative and management positions in government and community organizations for twenty-five years. He enjoys sharing his knowledge of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal land base and local community history, most recently has Deputy Tribal Clerk. Derrick managed land transactions, overseeing all processes associated with land transfers including providing testimony and research for Tribal Court land dispute and probate matters. He advocates for the vulnerable population and is dedicated to finding resolution to the many issues the community has made him aware during his tenure.
Prior to becoming Deputy Tribal Clerk, Derrick attained extensive experience in working with local, Federal, and State governmental agencies as a Grants & Contracts Officer. A resource for program managers and staff, he enjoys being an integral part of the collaborative effort of ensuring exemplary community programming, sustainability, and success. In one his most notable projects, Derrick was a key player in securing the United States Department of Agriculture Broadband Initiatives Program grant, which secured 10.5 million dollars to construct the fiber optic network which became Mohawk Networks. Part of a diverse grant management team, Derrick's role was to electronically submit complex funding applications ensuring all required federal forms and funding application guidelines were followed.
Derrick believes in utilizing local knowledge, talent, and skills to succeed as a nation and encourages friendly open dialogue to address concerns, to celebrate successes and to explore new ideas. His passions include promoting local artistry, businesses, agriculture, and community resources needed for community wellbeing and happiness. Derrick states that there are many issues and problems that can destroy who we are if we don’t understand our differences and recognize our abilities. He shares with Council his dedication to creating a healthier, happier and safer community and is keen on celebrating our resilience and signifying our presence now and for future generations. By working together, we can build a healthier, stronger, and more prosperous community.
